Larian is in talks with Microsoft after a Baldur’s Gate 3 player got banned for taking screenshots during romance scenes.

A few days ago, we covered the incident of an Xbox player receiving a one-year ban for recording gameplay footage featuring sex scenes in Baldur’s Gate 3. As all captures are uploaded to Xbox’s servers, the content undergoes moderation to filter out inappropriate material, leading to the ban for this particular player.

Following the online spread of the story, Xbox has since lifted the ban on the player. However, the question remains – is it safe to record romance scenes in Baldur’s Gate 3? Larian, the game’s developer, is seeking clarification on this matter and is currently engaged in discussions with Microsoft to resolve the issue.

According to Michael Douse, Larian’s head of publishing, “We’ve seen the reports that some players got banned or otherwise faced issues on Xbox having uploaded screenshots/videos of their ‘gameplay content’. We’re in discussion with Microsoft, and we’re looking into it. Annoying and uncool.”

Before gaining widespread attention, the affected Xbox user had already appealed the ban and received confirmation that it would be upheld. The resolution of the issue likely occurred due to the Baldur’s Gate fanbase sharing the story extensively. While Larian works with Microsoft to address the matter, it might be advisable to refrain from capturing footage of Baldur’s Gate 3’s sex scenes to avoid potential complications during the appeals process.

There should be a solution to this issue, especially considering that similar incidents haven’t been reported on PlayStation 5. Forcing players to disable nudity isn’t a practical solution, given the game’s existing 18+ rating. Moreover, the inclusion of explicit features like “dick physics” by Larian suggests an intention to embrace mature content.

As of now, there is no update from Microsoft on the situation. It remains to be seen whether Microsoft will reconsider its stance, as it would be peculiar for the company to sell the game on its storefront while restricting players from sharing screenshots.

However, this isn’t the only problem related to Baldur’s Gate 3 that Microsoft is dealing with. In recent weeks, players on the platform have experienced data loss in their save files, likely due to a firmware issue on Xbox’s end. While awaiting a resolution, Larian recommends setting up cross-platform saves to ensure campaign data is backed up elsewhere.
