Baldur’s Gate 3 is out now in Japan, but this new version of the game won’t let you strip.
Baldur’s Gate 3 brings together a group of adventurous individuals in a camp, each with a ticking time bomb embedded in their heads, and essentially encourages them to engage in intimate activities. Consequently, players have the option to undress their characters entirely.
However, for those who prefer a more modest experience, nudity can be disabled, replacing exposed areas with strategically placed leaves (hoping, perhaps, that fellow party members will take the hint and respect personal space—get it? Sorry!). Notably, in the Japanese release, characters are consistently covered up.
A user named deathjokerz shared on the game’s subreddit, “Extra ‘armor’ for characters in Baldur’s Gate 3’s Japan release,” along with an image of their robust character discreetly concealing their private parts with a loosely hanging leaf, reminiscent of the Adam-and-Eve tale. The post explained that due to CERO’s classification requirements, full exposure of characters is prohibited.
While nudity can be toggled off in the original version through the accessibility tab, the Japanese edition doesn’t offer the option in the first place. In this version, your character (Tav) and any party members you attempt to undress will always modestly cover up.
Despite Baldur’s Gate 3 receiving a Z rating from CERO (equivalent to the ESRB’s M rating), the classification standards in Japan don’t permit explicit content, leading publisher Spike Chunsoft to make alterations for the game’s release. Unfortunately, this means that even beloved characters like Gale won’t be able to experience the game in its original form.
In addition to restricting nudity during gameplay, the Japanese version also censors “nudity in cutscenes” and the depiction of intimate encounters. If you were anticipating exploring Astarion, Faerûn’s charming vampire, in more detail, I regret to inform you that those scenes are unavailable. However, modders may eventually find ways to restore such content.
There are still some unanswered questions, such as how certain scenes, like the romantic encounter involving tentacles, are handled. Will they be covered with leaves, or do they not fall under the category of explicit content? Likewise, the fate of Halsin, the hunky druid featured in the bear sex scene showcased by Larian Studios, remains uncertain.
Only time will reveal the extent of these modifications, but one thing is certain: players won’t have the opportunity to go entirely nude as they explore the Underdark.
