CDPR CEO Regrets Launching Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty So Late

Joint CDPR CEO Michał Nowakowski says launching Phantom Liberty three years after Cyberpunk 2077 was “counterintuitive”.

Released almost three years ago on December 10, 2022, Cyberpunk 2077 faced a tumultuous launch, prompting its removal from the PlayStation store due to a surge in refund requests. In response, CD Projekt Red undertook extensive efforts to address performance issues and implement promised features, like a functional metro system, resulting in a delay of planned DLCs.

Two years later, Phantom Liberty was finally launched, marking a considerable wait for the continuation of V’s story—a delay that CD Projekt Red’s joint CEO, Michał Nowakowski, now regrets in hindsight.

While the studio is currently focused on upcoming projects such as The Witcher 4 (details of which are scarce) and a remake of the first Witcher game, there are also ongoing developments in the world of Cyberpunk. However, CD Projekt Red is temporarily stepping away from the vibrant, neon-lit Night City to explore Andrzej Sapkowski’s fantasy universe.

Nowakowski also provided insights into the performance of Cyberpunk 2077’s DLC compared to The

Witcher 3’s Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions. Notably, the latter’s major DLC stories were released within the same year as the base game, unlike Cyberpunk 2077, which had a two-year delay.

In a tweet, Nowakowski revealed that three months after the launch of Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, they achieved attach rates of 22% and 24%, respectively. Phantom Liberty, released in a similar timeframe, landed within this range. Despite the prolonged wait, Cyberpunk 2077 has sold over 25 million units, and Phantom Liberty has exceeded five million units, indicating strong performance for CD Projekt Red.
