Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is yet another RPG that’s taking inspiration from The Witcher 3 for its side content.

Motomu Toriyama, the co-director of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, has disclosed that the game’s side quests drew inspiration from those featured in The Witcher 3, widely acclaimed as one of the best in the genre.

While the side quests in Final Fantasy 7 Remake faced criticism for feeling like add-ons with limited depth, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth appears poised to avoid similar feedback. The game has emphasized a greater focus on supplementary content outside the main storyline, with a notable influence coming from The Witcher 3.

In a recent preview by Game Informer, Rebirth’s director, Naoki Hamaguchi, and co-director Motomu Toriyama discussed the game’s renewed emphasis on side quests and open-world elements. Hamaguchi promptly declared The Witcher 3 as his favorite RPG, and Toriyama expanded on how it influenced their approach to side content, serving as a benchmark for Rebirth.

Toriyama clarified, “Concerning games similar to The Witcher 3, which feature open-world role-playing elements, we conducted thorough research into such titles. We considered it as a standard against which Rebirth should be a game capable of standing alongside, offering content that is fulfilling for its players.”

The acknowledgment of The Witcher 3 as a source of inspiration for side quests in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth signals a positive direction for the game. It underscores the increased importance placed on additional content this time, especially when compared to the more linear and repetitive offerings in the Remake.

It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first instance of a game’s side content drawing inspiration from The Witcher 3, a title that continues to set industry and genre standards. A recent example is God of War Ragnarok, which aspired to surpass The Witcher 3 in terms of quest quality.
