Dave Jones, who plays Halsin in Baldur’s Gate 3, didn’t think many players would want to get down and dirty with a bear.
Oh, Halsin, a character with quite a busy life, managing the Druid Grove and grappling with the Shadow Curse in Baldur’s Gate 3. Yet, he’s most famously known for one thing – the unconventional option of engaging in a romantic encounter with him while he’s in bear form.
Dave Jones, the actor behind Halsin, was well aware of the unique nature of this dialogue before the game’s launch. He even had to record the lines for this amorous scene. Recently, during a panel discussion at EGX, Jones opened up about his surprising expectations regarding players’ choices in the game.
When the panel members were asked to share their favorite lines from the game, the audience couldn’t contain their laughter when it was Dave Jones’ turn. His hesitation made it evident that his favorite line came from the infamous romantic encounter. He candidly confessed, “I didn’t think that a lot of players would actually choose that path.”
This particular line, “You… like it?” is delivered during the memorable Halsin romance scene. In this scene, Halsin momentarily loses control and transforms into his bear form. Upon his return to his human state, you have the option to respond with, “Don’t apologize. I like it.” Halsin’s reaction and the subsequent events have garnered much attention and amusement from players.
Dave Jones’ rendition of this line in front of a live audience elicited laughter and applause, making it evident why it stood out to him. What’s surprising, however, is that he initially believed that players wouldn’t be overwhelmingly drawn to this unconventional path. It seems he may have underestimated the adventurous spirit of the gaming community.
This Baldur’s Gate 3 panel at EGX unveiled various intriguing insights. Amelia Tyler, who provides the game’s narration, mentioned that she recorded 17 different voices for the game. Her narration style varies depending on the character you’re playing.
Her favorite narration to record was for “The Dark Urge,” which she described as delightfully over-the-top evil. With so many different narrations available, players can expect a fresh experience with each playthrough, as long as they choose a different character origin.
In summary, while Halsin’s bear form romance might have been an unexpected hit, it’s just one of the many surprising aspects of Baldur’s Gate 3 that keeps players coming back for more.
