Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door just got an ESRB rating, suggesting that its 2024 release date will be sooner than we think.

The ESRB has recently assigned an age rating to Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, hinting at a potential release date announcement in the near future. While the remaster is slated for 2024, the presence of an age rating suggests that its arrival might be sooner than initially anticipated.

Unsurprisingly, the game has received an E (Everyone) rating, citing mild fantasy violence and mild “suggestive themes.” Although this isn’t the first rating the remaster has obtained, it holds significant importance as it paves the way for the game’s sale in a major market. This development, possibly indicating an early release in the first half of 2024, was discovered by ResetEra user Angie.

The ESRB details that a “handful” of characters engage in “brief flirtatious dialogue” with the player, showcasing examples like “Perhaps if I…grabbed you and gave you a little sugar.” Despite these mature elements, the rating suggests that the game is approaching its release, given the time the ESRB has had to assess its content.

Beyond the flirtatious banter, the rating implies that the game might be on track for a Spring 2024 release, or even earlier for the optimists. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door originally launched in 2004 for the GameCube, and a potential 20th-anniversary release could occur later in the year, aligning with its Japanese release in July and subsequent release in other regions in October.

While the game appears to be in good shape, it’s crucial to note that a playable state doesn’t necessarily indicate immediate release plans. Drawing a parallel with past delays in other game projects, such as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which faced a year-long delay for polishing despite being deemed “pretty much complete” by producer Eiji Aonuma, emphasizes the unpredictable nature of release timelines. Nevertheless, given the relatively smaller scale of this project, there is optimism that Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door will adhere to its 2024 release window. The exact release date remains uncertain, and fans eagerly await further updates from Nintendo.
