Baldur’s Gate 3 just added a new permadeath difficulty, but of course, one speedrunner already beat it in under an hour.
Patch 5 has introduced a challenging new difficulty level in Baldur’s Gate 3 called Honour Mode, where the stakes are high with permanent death and the inability to save scum. This mode, even more formidable than Tactician, is not for the faint of heart. Despite the daunting prospect it presents, a speedrunner has remarkably conquered it in less than an hour.
In this typical speedrun featuring customary skips and exploits, failure is not an option. The threat of death looms large, and bad dice rolls cannot be avoided. Despite these challenges, Chronos defied the odds, completing the Honour Mode in a swift 38 minutes and eight seconds.
The tension escalated towards the end when the Netherbrain was reduced to just two hit points, plunging Chronos into a momentary panic with only one party member remaining. Fortunately, the Netherbrain succumbed to fire damage on its turn, eliminating any chance of retaliation and sealing its immediate demise.
Following the triumphant conclusion of the run, Chronos, proud of the well-deserved accomplishment, revisited an old save to explore the new and stylish dice awarded for conquering Honour Mode. Upon receiving the Golden die, joining the ranks of Behir Blue, Dragonflame Red, and Scuffed Metal, Chronos expressed joy, exclaiming, “There we go, Shining Honour, look at that, it’s so nice.”
While Honour Mode proves to be a formidable challenge, the prospect of obtaining the coveted golden dice quickly may be enticing for speedrunners. Chronos navigated Act 1 in just over five minutes using exploits and specific strategies, effortlessly defeating the Ketheric boss and dispatching the Netherbrain in a single turn, counting the fire damage.
For those contemplating an Honour Mode attempt, it’s crucial to note the stringent rules: a single save is permitted, party wipe results in game over, bosses wield Legendary Actions for increased difficulty, and the mode is an advanced version of Tactician, featuring tougher enemies with more health, diverse weaponry, and improved tactics.
While selecting Honour Mode from the menu without completing the game first is an option, diving into this challenging mode on the initial attempt is likely to pose significant challenges.
