Starfield has made it into Steam’s 2023 best sellers despite negative reviews on the platform.
Starfield emerged as one of the standout performers on Steam in the past year, sharing the spotlight with notable titles such as Baldur’s Gate 3, Destiny 2, Sons of the Forest, and more. Interestingly, this success comes despite a mixed reception among general players, leading the game to accumulate “mostly negative” reviews on the Steam platform.
What makes this accomplishment even more remarkable is the fact that Starfield was available on Game Pass for both Xbox and PC right from its launch. This accessibility meant that many players could experience the game without having to make a separate purchase. Nevertheless, Starfield has achieved significant success on Steam alone, securing a position at the top of the charts alongside games that had more limited releases.
The recently unveiled Best of Steam page for 2023 places Starfield in the platinum section. While the list doesn’t precisely rank games based on sales, it indicates that Starfield falls somewhere between the best-selling and the 15th best-selling title on the platform.
The complete list of the top 15 revenue-generating games on Steam in 2023 includes:
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Destiny 2
- Apex Legends
- Sons of the Forest
- Counter-Strike 2
- Dota 2
- Hogwarts Legacy
- PUBG: Battlegrounds
- Lost Ark
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
- Cyberpunk 2077
There are some surprises on the list, such as Cyberpunk 2077 maintaining its presence three years after launch, aided by updates and the Phantom Liberty expansion. Sons of the Forest, despite being a smaller game, gained popularity with its early access release in February and is set for a full release almost exactly a year later on February 22, 2024.
Starfield’s successful start is particularly noteworthy, considering Bethesda’s meticulous approach to game development. It serves as the studio’s most recent RPG for the foreseeable future, providing reassurance by securing a spot among Steam’s best-sellers. However, whether it can match the enduring popularity of Skyrim and Fallout 4 remains to be seen, as fans eagerly await news on Bethesda’s next project. Xbox boss Phil Spencer has expressed confidence in Starfield, suggesting it will captivate players similarly to Skyrim.
Speaking of Skyrim, it still holds its ground among Steam’s best-sellers, though it resides in the bronze section, not platinum. Meanwhile, The Elder Scrolls Online claims a silver position, reflecting its diverse revenue streams beyond the initial game purchase.
