Walmart Staff Memo Reveals Physical Starfield Stock Is Being Removed

Walmart Staff Memo Reveals Physical Starfield Stock Is Being Removed

Date: January 22, 2024

There’s a very slim chance you can find a copy for three cents if you time it right and someone slips up.

The future of physical media in the realm of video games remains uncertain. Notably, Alan Wake 2 and Hellblade 2 opted out of physical releases, and Best Buy is phasing out physical media from its in-store offerings. Following this trend, an internal memo circulating among Walmart staff suggests that physical copies of Starfield may soon be removed from sale, potentially as early as the moment you read this.

Andrew Marmo initially shared photos of the memo last week, revealing that physical copies of Starfield are slated to be marked down to three cents for disposal at the store level. While the chance of snagging a copy for this minimal amount seems slim, it hinges on a potential mistake by a Walmart employee.

Reports suggesting Starfield’s disappearance from Walmart shelves starting January 22 have gained credibility from Rychu, who claims to be a Walmart employee. Confirming the authenticity of the memo on ResetEra, Rychu indicates that once the price drops to three cents, purchases of Starfield will be blocked. Furthermore, Rychu suggests that this move might just be the beginning, as Walmart higher-ups have allegedly discussed abandoning physical game sales for at least a year.

For those contemplating obtaining a physical copy of Starfield, especially from Walmart, the urgency is apparent. The game’s physical copies will likely become scarcer after today, and their resale prices may rise as unwanted copies become more sought after.

Despite Starfield being released only four months ago, its performance, perhaps affected by its availability on Game Pass, may explain why Walmart appears to be abandoning efforts to sell its physical stock. On a positive note for those hoping physical games endure, Sea of Stars, initially released digitally in 2023, is receiving a physical release this year, available for pre-order.
