Bryan Ansell, the co-creator of Warhammer, dies age 68.

Bryan Ansell, the co-creator of the Warhammer series, passed away at 68, as confirmed by his wife. She stated that Ansell “passed away peacefully at home” on December 30, surrounded by his family.

While serving as the managing director of Games Workshop, Ansell collaborated with Richard Halliwell and Rick Priestley to co-author the inaugural edition of Warhammer, originally known as Warhammer Fantasy Battle. This 1983 release laid the groundwork for an RPG franchise that has expanded across various platforms over the decades.

According to Wargamer, Ansell entered the industry in 1976, later making his mark at Games Workshop. He played a crucial role in the creation of Warhammer, guiding Games Workshop’s focus toward this innovative series.

Although Ansell took a step back from Games Workshop in 1991, his legacy endures in the thriving wargame manufacturing company that continues to operate today. Widely recognized for its Warhammer releases, the company owes much of its success to Ansell’s early contributions to Warhammer Fantasy Battle. What initially aimed to boost miniature sales has grown into one of the world’s most successful miniature wargame series, notably Warhammer 40K.
